Getting Connected

The Macintosh operating system comes with all the software you need to get started using the Internet -- well, almost. You should have MacTCP already installed. You may or may not have a copy of MacPPP. It's freely available on the Internet, however, and Goldinc can provide you with a copy on a Macintosh disk if you need it. For now, let's assume that you have MacTCP and have MacPPP installed.

First, go to the Apple Menu and select "control panels". Based on how your system is configured, selecting "Control Panels" will either bring up a hierarchical menu of control panels, or it will display the control panels folder. Double click "ConfigPPP" or select the menu item for ConfigPPP, as appropriate.

Define a new PPP Server named "Goldinc".

Click on the config button

When you're in the ConfigPPP control panel, there will be controls for setting the port where the modem is attached. This is usually the Modem Port. Set your baud rate to be as large as is allowed: 57600 baud on older Macs, 230K on new models.

Set flow control for CTS only

Select tone dial

Enter *70,8650400 for the phone number. (You only need the *70 if you have call waiting; otherwise you can just enter 8650400).

For modem init enter atz (which will reset your modem each time you use it). For further info on your particular modem, see Information on Modem Init Strings

Click on connect script

1st line - click out and click CR
2nd line - click wait and enter "n: " (Don't use the quotation marks, just make sure you put the text in exactly like what is inside the quotation marks and notice there is a space after the colon!)
3rd line - click out and enter your login name and click CR
4th line - click wait and enter "d: " (again, no quotes and the space after the colon!)
5th line - click out and enter your password and click CR
6th line - click wait and enter "e: " (no quotes, space after colon)
7th line - click out and enter "ppp" (remember, no quotes)

You have now completed the setup! Restart your computer.

Each time you log into goldinc, go to config ppp in your control panel and select open. You will hear your modem dial and connect. After connection, launch the browser of your choice. When you quit out of your browser, make sure you go back to config ppp and click hard close to be fully disconnected from our modem bank.
